Homeowner Celebrates Eminent Domain Win with Balloons

<=p>A Portland Homeowner fought off an attempt to take his home by eminent domain for the building of a new Portland State University residence hall. Randal Acker celebrated his win by floating 400 helium balloons over his house, which bears a resemblance to the house in the Pixar film, Up. Construction for the 16-story building towers over Acker’s 1894 Queen Anne Victorian, which he bought at a time when TriMet was buying up and demolishing adjacent properties in order to build the residence hall.

Mr. Acker practices commercial law, but said, “I told them that if I had to do eminent domain law for the next two years to save the house, I would do it.” TriMet dropped attempts to seize Acker’s home and began construction around it.
