At the Frontier of Change: How—or Where—to Rebuild as Alaska's Permafrost Disappears

    September 28, 2026 —
In some areas of the tiny subsistence coastal village of Kwigillingok along the Bering Sea in western Alaska, pockets of ground feel squishy, almost gelatinous, rather than solid. It’s an odd sensation, as if there is only a thin layer of muddy soil preventing people from falling into the water beneath their feet. Read the full story...

Nordics Are Europe’s Next Data Center Hub

    October 05, 2026 —
On September 9, 2026, Google announced its largest single investment in Europe. The company commits at least €13 billion to Finnish data centers and energy infrastructure in 2027 and 2028, expanding the existing Hamina campus and adding three new sites in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. For the construction sector, this is great news: thousands of hectares, dozens of buildings, and a construction program that will extend well beyond the two-year investment window. Four Sites, One Regional Cluster Google is not a newcomer in Finland. Back in 2009, it converted a former paper mill in Hamina into a seawater-cooled data center. It has invested around €4.5 billion there over 15 years, and the site’s waste heat already feeds Hamina’s district heating network. The new program shifts the center of gravity north, to the border of North Ostrobothnia and Kainuu. Read the full story...

SB 342 Eliminates the “All-or-Nothing” Rule Under Dreaded Business and Professions Code Section 7031

    November 02, 2026 —
Most California contractors are aware of dreaded Business and Professions Code section 7031 which has been described even by courts – who typically veer away from ascribing judgment to legislation – as being “harsh[ ],” “draconian” and “unjust.” For those less familiar with Section 7031, the statute provides two remedies, described as a shield and a sword, against unlicensed contractors who perform work requiring a license. The first, the “shield” also referred to as the “claim preclusion” provision, precludes unlicensed contractors from suing for payment when performing work requiring a license. The second, the “sword” also referred to as the “disgorgement” provision, allows a property owner to sue an unlicensed contractor for disgorgement of all money paid to the unlicensed contractor. Late Notice Bars Insured’s Claim for Wind Damage

    June 29, 2026 —
The court found that a six-month delay in reporting damage from wind did not comply with the policy’s notice requirements. Touchmark Hotel Group, LLC v. Mt. Hawley Ins. Co., 2026 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 61910 (S.D. N. Y. March 24, 2026). A storm caused damage to Touchstone’s hotel on January 4, 2023. Touchstone’s corporate representative, Rohit Patel, testified that he was not at the property on the day of the storm. In a telephone call the next day, the manager of the property reported to Patel that he observed detached shingles from the roof the hotel in the parking lot. Patel testified that he did not file a claim at that time because Touchmark’s employees did not detect any water leakage in the building and because he did not believe that the cost of the damage from the storm would exceed the policy’s deductible. Humanoid Robots in Construction: The Reality Right Now

    October 12, 2026 —
Humanoid robots are getting a lot of media attention. Videos of robots doing backflips and kung fu moves suggest that a general-purpose machine worker is just around the corner. A recent visit by the Finnish technology magazine Tekniikka&Talous to crane manufacturer Konecranes offers a more sober picture. I think it is a useful reality check for anyone in the AEC industry wondering what humanoids can actually do today. What a Humanoid Can Do in a Controlled Environment Konecranes bought a Unitree G1 EDU humanoid in autumn 2025, likely as the first Finnish industrial company to do so. With separately purchased five-finger hands and other extras, the price came close to €100,000. Read the full story...
