Rebuilding in Fire-Damaged Los Angeles One Year Later

As wildfires, and subsequent mudslides become more frequent and destructive across Los Angeles, rebuilding efforts must go beyond policy reform to address a critical, often overlooked challenge: the condition of the land itself. Mayor Karen Bass’ recent executive actions–streamlining approvals, reducing fees and allowing rebuilt homes to be up to 10% larger–mark meaningful progress in cutting red tape. But while these changes may make rebuilding easier on paper, difficulties remain hidden beneath the rubble. Before the Blueprint, the Groundwork In hillside neighborhoods like Pacific Palisades, where entire communities have been reduced to ash, rebuilding does not only begin with drawings or permits–it may begin with stabilizing the land. Many of the coastal and hillside neighborhoods are naturally unstable, and since many homes were built prior to 1956–pre-codification of artificial fill for building pads–slope reinforcement, soil replacement, deep foundation systems, engineered grading or some other forms of mitigation are required. These measures are not only time-intense and highly technical, but they are also expensive and often not covered by insurance. How to Fireproof a Neighborhood

KB Home’s developments tackle an issue that’s hard for any individual homeowner to overcome: “You can do your home perfectly, but if your neighbor didn’t, you still have a fire risk,” said Roy Wright, chief executive officer of the research nonprofit Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. Bad Faith Claim Survives Summary Judgment

June 08, 2026 — Tred R. Eyerly - Insurance Law Hawaii
The court denied the insurer’s motion for partial summary judgment on the insured’s bad faith claim, but granted the motion on the insured’s claim for punitive damages. Serbian Orthodox Church v. Brotherhood Mut. Ins. Co., 2026 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 58234 (S.D. Cal. March 19, 2026). On February 1, 2023, the Church filed a claim for water damage with Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company (BMIC). The claim was based on rain and wind that caused extensive water intrusion into the Sanctuary, damaging its plaster walls and ceilings and fresco paintings. The claim was assigned to Patrick Hurley. Hurley sent a letter discussing potential bars to coverage and requesting further information and documents from the Church. Read the full story...

Seattle Team Obtains Summary Judgment in Real Estate Broker Professional Liability Action

Seattle Partner Kathleen A. Nelson and Associate Synova M. L. Edwards prevailed on a hotly contested motion for summary judgment in Whatcom County, Washington court in a real estate broker professional liability action. The plaintiff filed an action against Lewis Brisbois' clients, a real estate agent and brokerage firm, among several others, including the title company, purchasers and others related to the sale of real property following his complicated and long running divorce action. These claims primarily arose out of the clients’ reliance on an order signed by the court in the underlying divorce action. The order allowed the clients to execute the purchase and sale agreement, as the plaintiff was non-cooperative. Read the full story...

At the Intersection of Indemnity and Prevailing Wages

In a case that I’m frankly surprised I don’t see more of, the 2nd District Court of Appeal of California examined an indemnity claim by a subcontractor against a general contractor and public entity who mistakenly believed that a construction project did not require the payment of prevailing wages. The Nabors Case In Nabors Corporate Services, Inc. v. City of Long Beach, 108 Cal.App 540 (2025), subcontractor Nabors Corporate Services, Inc. sued general contractor Tidelands Oil Production Company and the City of Long Beach after it was found liable in a class action lawsuit for failing to pay prevailing wages to its employees. Nabors’ contract with Tidelands did not require the payment of prevailing wages and neither Tidelands nor the City believed that the project, which involved “oil well plug and abandonment” work, required the payment of prevailing wages. How AI Turns Construction Documents Into Procurement Intelligence

In this episode, I speak with Victor Muchiri from BuildVision about what it actually takes to make AI useful in construction procurement, not as a pilot, but in production. We dig into why you cannot simply upload a set of construction drawings to ChatGPT and trust the output. Construction documents are complex, cross-referenced, and consequential. Without deep domain context, such as manufacturer ontologies, equipment taxonomies, and engineering expertise, AI produces plausible results, not reliable ones.
