Water Reuse Emerges as a Critical Strategy for Data Center Development

    June 22, 2026 —
As demand for data centers continues to accelerate, water availability is emerging as a critical factor in project development and long-term operations. Although power supply and transmission access have historically dominated siting discussions, increasing water constraints in many regions are placing greater focus on the substantial volumes of water required to support data center cooling systems. As we covered previously, data centers are frequently located in areas already experiencing water stress and require substantial volumes of water to operate—roughly 228 billion gallons in 2023 in the United States alone—with water use projected to increase by up to 170% by 2030. Alternative cooling options, such as free-air cooling or mechanical chillers, can reduce direct water consumption but introduce their own tradeoffs. Free-air cooling is climate-dependent and often ineffective in hotter regions, while mechanical chillers increase energy demand, potentially shifting water consumption upstream through increased electricity generation. 2026 Construction Outlook: Dampening Outlook With Some Potential Bright Spots

    February 17, 2026 —
According to Dodge Construction Network’s Outlook 2026 Ebook, “the construction industry came roaring into 2025” – with large government investments through the Infrastructure Bill and the CHIPS Act (promoting investment in the domestic semiconductor industry), as well as outsized spending on data centers to support cloud and AI technology – but “throttled back significantly” due to “rapid changes to economic and fiscal policies.” These changes include short-term cost impacts due to tariffs and labor impacts due to the federal government’s immigration crackdown and long-term concerns following enactment of the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBBA) which is anticipated to add $3.4 trillion to the federal deficit over ten years. The Firm Turns 16!

    July 20, 2026 —
I have always found it appropriate that my jump to solo practice and Independence Day are so close in time. Today marks the 16th anniversary of my first day as a solo practitioner of construction law at The Law Office of Christopher G. Hill, PC. Time sure has flown by thanks to the great clients and friends who followed me to solo practice and whom I have met since the firm’s founding on July 1, 2010. I also could not have made the transition and had the fun and success I have enjoyed over the past 16 years without the support of the best wife and family that any construction lawyer could want. Since the firm’s last anniversary, my youngest child (who was 7 when this journey began!) has graduated from N. C. State University with a fisheries and wildlife biology degree and is currently in Casper, Wyoming working for Wyoming Game & Fish, my second oldest is an assistant director of admissions at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and has celebrated his second wedding anniversary, and my oldest has celebrated her fifth marriage anniversary. Our home in Captiva, Florida continues its recovery from from Hurricane Ian and subsequent hurricanes. Read the full story...
